KwaZulu-Natal interior designer Cara Slater embarked on the design and development of Saxonwood Villas alongside her father, Norman Slater, in 2012. The father-daughter combination proved invaluable throughout the process, as Cara fondly remembers: “Dad often picked up on the practicalities, whereas I brought a female approach.”

Instead of a traditional headboard, French oak cladding was used behind this bed to add a contemporary feel to the classic decor. “If you want to do something similar, use engineered timber panels rather than solid wood, as wood expands and contracts according to the temperature,” says interior architectural designer Cara Slater-Middlewick.
This house is part of the Saxonwood Luxury Villas development in Ballito, KZN, where Interior architectural designer Cara Slater-Middlewick was involved in the design of all 10 units, creating homes for easy, luxurious living.

This family’s love of entertaining prompted the transformation of an uninspiring grassed area at the back of their home into the most loved spot. “Our guests move straight here when they arrive,” says the couple. “It has really changed the dynamic of our home.”
